Skukuza Camp, Kruger National Park, Mpumalanga. Everything you need to plan the trip: where to stay, how to get there, and what to bring.

Conference venue

A conference centre inside the park

ICTMA23 is hosted at the Nombolo Mdhluli Conference Centre in Skukuza Camp, a setting for academic exchange inside one of Africa's best known natural environments.

The venue is safe and secure, and well established, with modern conference facilities: a large plenary venue, four breakaway rooms for the academic programme, and a spacious foyer for networking and exhibitions. All rooms have modern presentation and audio-visual equipment.

More about the venue is on the Skukuza Safari Lodge conferencing page.

About Skukuza

The largest camp in the Kruger

Skukuza is the largest camp in the Kruger National Park and the park's administrative headquarters, as well as a centre for conservation, research and environmental education. It lies in the south of the park on the Sabie River.

The camp has more than 200 accommodation units. Visitors can see the railway museum at the old siding on the Selati line, the Campbell 1929 Hut Museum (a national monument), and a restaurant set in historic railway carriages. There is an outdoor amphitheatre for wildlife films and a 9-hole, 18-tee golf course.

Getting there

By air or by road

The park gates close at 18:00

In August 2027 all Kruger gates open at 06:00 and close at 18:00. Aim to reach Paul Kruger Gate by 17:00 at the latest to allow for entry formalities. The drive from the gate to Skukuza takes about 25 minutes. Plan flights, transfers and drives so that you reach the gate in time.

By air

The easiest way in is to fly from OR Tambo International in Johannesburg to Skukuza Airport (SZZ), about 8 km from the venue. Transfers between the airport and the camp are arranged by the organisers and can be booked through this website at an extra cost. Kruger Mpumalanga International (MQP) near Mbombela is also an option, but it is 101 km and about two hours by road from Skukuza, so it is not recommended.

Car hire is available at both airports.

By road from Johannesburg

Many people drive from Johannesburg. A standard car is fine for the route, which runs through the scenery of Mpumalanga, and hire cars are available at the major airports. About 464 km, 5½ to 6 hours.

Self-drive tips

  • Travel in daylight and avoid driving at night.
  • Use the N12 and N4 via eMalahleni (Witbank) and Mbombela (Nelspruit).
  • Stop at established service stations. Alzu Petroport and Milly's are good, safe places for a break.
  • Keep valuables out of sight and lock the car when you stop.
  • South Africans drive on the left. Give way to the right at circles, and expect some drivers to treat them as four-way stops.
  • If you have time before or after the conference, the Panorama Route, Blyde River Canyon and God's Window are close by.

Driving in the park

  • Keep to park speed limits: usually 50 km/h on tar and 40 km/h on gravel. Around 30 km/h is best for game viewing.
  • Allow extra time. Sightings slow traffic.
  • Stay in your vehicle except at rest camps, picnic sites and marked viewing points.
  • Carry water, snacks and a charged phone, and never feed the animals.
  • Fill up with fuel when you can.

August is one of the best months for game viewing. With the bush dry, animals gather around rivers and waterholes.

Visas and passports

Entering South Africa

  • You need two blank facing pages in your passport to enter South Africa.
  • Check whether you need a visa with the Department of Home Affairs. Applications can take about two months, so apply early.
  • For an invitation letter for your visa, email the organisers (and your accommodation, if needed) with a copy of your passport photo page. Allow three working days.

Department of Home Affairs: 0800 60 11 90, toll-free from within South Africa.

Health and weather

Winter in the Lowveld

August is the dry winter season: cool mornings and evenings, warm days, little rain and light wind. Expect about 10°C early and late, rising to about 26°C in the afternoon. Power is 240 V, 50 Hz.

Check the vaccinations recommended for travellers from your country. August is low-risk season for malaria in the Kruger; SANParks has current guidance. Malaria information from SANParks.

What to pack

Layers for cold mornings and warm afternoons

Expect about 10°C on early drives and around 26°C in the middle of the day.

  • A warm jacket or fleece, beanie and scarf for early and evening drives
  • Light daytime clothes, plus long trousers and long sleeves for the evenings
  • Hat, sunglasses and sunscreen
  • Insect repellent and any personal medication
  • Comfortable walking shoes, and sandals for around camp
  • Binoculars and a camera
  • A reusable water bottle and a small torch or headlamp

If you plan to join a guided bush walk, bring hiking shoes or boots.
